The shop opened in 1995, specializing in the kawaii and the colorful as well as the unusual, such as bug-collecting containers sold as bags and traditional Japanese shop-entrance curtains made into hair accessories. While the key concept was “kawaii,” some of the store’s biggest inspirations for its unique look weren’t Japanese.

While on a trip to LA, Masuda discovered My Little Pony and Popples—which, at the time, were “totally not popular,” Masuda points out. He was blown away by them and bought as many as he could find. “They’re cute and colorful, but they are also a little creepy and seem to have an edge which makes them kawaii, yet not kawaii,” says Masuda. For him, that interplay of adorable and slightly unsettling is what kawaii is all about. This contrast proved to be a hit: after Sofia Coppola sang the store’s praises in 1996, Masuda recalls that more celebs started showing up and suddenly Japanese fashion mags started running articles and photo spreads on the shop. 6%DokiDoki might have only offered 6 percent excitement, but the buzz around the store was well over the 100 mark. Masuda and 6%DokiDoki became the fashion and style leaders for the day-glow crowd in Harajuku.
