Chapter Eighteen

“This is not a good idea.”

Lucy took a few quick steps forward to grab Nathan’s hand and reminded him he had to stay with her and Grady the entire time they were in the mall. “Well, we needed access to the ’net for another few minutes, and you didn’t want to backtrack to the library or use one of the phones. The mall is open ’til 9.”

“I know, I just…” And he had immediately seen the logic in her idea when she mentioned it, but this rundown mall between Toronto and Colin’s cabin wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind. He thought they’d be hidden in plain view with throngs of people, hard to pick out of a crowd in any surveillance video.

But here they were, the only ones in this entire hallway.

He did a surreptitious scan of the structure, trusting the brim of his baseball hat to obscure what he was looking at. He relaxed a little. Didn’t even look like this place had a surveillance system to speak of. And he could improve things even further. Whoever was after them was looking for a man, a woman, and a child. So they would stop being a man, a woman, and a child, and start acting like a family.

He reached down for Nathan’s free hand and swung him between he and Lucy like a monkey. Nathan laughed in delight and even Lucy started to grin.

The electronics section of the department store was a little busier and Grady made an effort to keep them from being caught on the cameras feeding the giant display screens. A free salesperson approached them, stifling a yawn. Grady immediately put on a big smile and roughed up Nathan’s hair before dropping his hand to the boy’s shoulder. “Well, hey there. Wonder if you can help us. My boy here is coming up to a birthday, and we’d like to look at some video game systems.”

The teenager perked right up. Grady had basically just given him permission to play video games for part of his shift. “Of course. We’ve got all the major brands, so the best thing might be to try a few of them out so you can decide what you like the best.”

Nathan played along beautifully. They’d prepped him in the car, and when Lucy ducked into the bathroom, Grady had told him to pay attention to which games he really liked so they could get them later to play on the system at Grady’s house. He’d said it without thinking. But when he heard the words coming out of his mouth he realized that part of him had started to plan a future with Lucy and Nathan. Lucy hadn’t recoiled from him in disgust when he’d told her about Afghanistan. Maybe he had a chance after he found Nathan’s mother and brought her home.

The sales clerk fiddled with the first game system and handed a controller to Nathan. He offered the second controller to Grady, who declined. Lucy was already tapping away at a laptop display and making notes on the library printouts as she went.
