Twenty-two. Twenty-four. Twenty-six Maple. There it was. Danny pulled his rental car over and put it in park. The neighborhood looked like every other Vancouver suburb Danny had driven through, and this house looked like every other house on the street. But according to the address Marlena had given them, this was the right place.
It turned out Marlena had no knowledge of any patent, but she knew the person whoâd been working on it. Apparently, Cyrus wasnât shy about broadcasting his opinions about trans people.
Ray had offered to come along, since theyâd been working the deal together for a while now. But Danny declined. There were other things he needed to do in Vancouver and he didnât want Ray getting in the way.
Things like sitting down with Tobin and having an honest heart-to-heart. Something that was long overdue. Tobin would hate it, but the whole âtaking advantageâ thing was real, and having Wei scream it in his face made Danny realize he couldnât ignore it anymore.
Theyâd had a good time. Itâd been fun. But it was time for them to confront the facts. Their little affair involved way more people than simply the two of them. Their actions and decisions affected Wei and Uncle Man and Auntie Grace. To deny that was the epitome of selfishness.
Danny wasnât looking forward to that conversation. But firstâRiver Teegee.
He got out and strode up the driveway. A car was parked there; good since he was showing up unannounced. Ray had tried reaching out to River repeatedly with emails and phone calls, but hadnât gotten a response. So their last-ditch attempt was Danny coming in person to plead their case. He rang the doorbell and a muted ring sounded inside. Floorboards creaked under footsteps before the door opened only a crack. Barely enough to reveal a face framed with long black hair and big gold-rimmed glasses. They eyed Danny up and down. âCan I help you?â
âMy name is Daniel Ip, from Jade Harbour Capital. Iâm looking for River Teegee.â
They narrowed their eyes. âI donât have anything to say to you,â they said and then shut the door in his face.
Danny had expected as much. He knocked on the door and rang the bell again. âPlease, I could really use your help. Itâll only take a moment.â
No response. He knocked again. âAny information you can give me will be kept strictly confidential. No one will know we spoke.â
Nothing. He knocked on more time. âAt least listen to what my questions are.â
Next door, a screen door creaked open and an old woman with white hair stepped out. She glared at Danny. âWhatâs all this racket? Do I need to call the police?â
Shit. The last thing Danny needed was getting the police involved. âSorry, maâam. Everythingâs fine. Sorry to disturb you.â He took a few steps backward, only to have Riverâs door open again.
They peered out at the older woman. âMind your own business, Karen.â Then to Danny. âGet in here before the cops start showing up.
