Budgeting: Put to Work What God Provides

The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

Big Idea for Lesson #7: Having a spending plan helps us live within our means so we are free to serve God and others. Faithful stewards put God’s resources to work.

This lesson on budgeting provides the practical framework for faithful financial stewardship. A budget can be simply defined as a financial plan to put God’s resources to work according to our means and in keeping with His interests because, after all, it’s all His money. If we don’t have a plan, it is easy to overspend or squander God’s provision.

Do not waste any part of so precious a talent merely in gratifying the desire of the eye, by superfluous and expensive apparel, or by needless ornaments. Waste no part of it in curiously adorning your houses, in superfluous and expensive furniture; in costly pictures, painting, gilding, books: in elegant (rather than useful) gardens. Let your neighbors, who know nothing better, do this. 2
