While many point-of-sale problems result from inexperienced, dishonest, or improperly trained personnel, a number of them occur because of security vulnerabilities throughout the sales and distribution process. Companies should have security controls in place at all the points in the foreign sales and distribution network that they either control or can influence. While the controls can’t eliminate all vulnerabilities, they should address the most critical ones.

Precautionary measures should include:

Ensuring all point-of-sale computer systems are up-to-date with security patches and anti-virus signature files

Installing file integrity monitoring and network-based intrusion detection software that can detect abnormal behavior

Separating point-of-sale networks from other nonrelated networks so as to prevent cross-network intrusion

Ensuring you have conducted sufficient background security checks on your personnel, and verifying that your distribution partners and stores that sell your products have done the same with their employees

Validating employee training programs

Monitoring, recording, and analyzing all abnormal activity (both human and data system)

Performing regular penetration testing of your sales computer systems, as well as those of your distribution chain partners or vendors
