1 Collecting Interview Data

In some respects, doing an interview is the most natural thing in the world. After all, a fair proportion of what appears on the Internet, television, radio and in newspapers consists of interviews. And these interviews seem not to have a predetermined pattern (as in survey research) but to be fairly free-flowing and open-ended (as in qualitative research). It is hardly surprising, then, that most student researchers identify qualitative research with the open-ended interview. For we all know what an interview looks like and have no difficulty in interviewing or being interviewed.

If you have had any experience of interview research, you will realize that things are not quite so straightforward as this might suggest, although maybe not quite so bad as the following example from an American sociology student attempting to gather interview data in Bangladesh.
