Chapter Ten

It was morning, and Robin picked up the large pot of meat, carrying it toward the kitchens. She had barely gotten any sleep last night and was extremely tired today. But that didn’t stop her mind from whirring and overworking, trying to sort out everything and figure out the problem at hand. Two men killed the same exact way, and her top suspect was no longer at the top. The more she thought about it, the less likely John seemed to be a suspect. No, someone else was doing all this. Someone in this cult, but who was it, and why were they doing all this?

Robin placed the pot of the meat near the fire, and Gloria took out the chunks and skewered them. Just near them, children were playing, shouting, and running after each other. Near them was a small nursery where women looked after kids who were too young to be left on their own.

“Today is going to be the day of Sarah’s betrothal,” Gloria said. “As the head of the kitchen, I thought we would prepare something special. We can all have a celebration later on.”

“When will it be announced?” Robin asked, her mind still far away.

“Today, in the afternoon,” Gloria said. “When the sun is highest so that we can have the complete blessing of God.”

“Hey, what do you know about Justin?” Robin asked, trying to sound casual.

“You mean the young boy who decided to leave us?” Gloria asked. John had made a proper announcement this morning before personally talking to his parents.

“Yeah, him,” Robin said. “He ever talk about leaving?”

“Barely anyone has ever left us,” Gloria said. “Bane was one of them, and then a little girl. No one else has ever wanted to leave this place. I mean, it’s like heaven, isn’t it? It is not going to get any better than this. Anyway, neither Bane nor that girl ever talked about leaving. I assume if someone did want to leave, they wouldn’t mention it to anyone. Just disappear whenever the chance came. These young ones always want to see the world – they think there is something special out there. Only we know about the cruel world outside. Only we know that all that awaits you outside is poverty, pain, and starvation. The only thing out there is ruthless, cruel humans and sinners. But they are young; they don’t know. They think they will find diamonds outside. But no matter, they will come back. I am sure they will.”

With that, a large bell started to ring, and Gloria said, “Ah, it is time for the betrothal. Come on.”

Robin followed her toward the center of the field, where the crowd was slowly starting to gather. The Elders already stood there, waiting, as did Sarah and a young boy who Robin assumed was Elliot. They stood there, holding hands with bright smiles on their faces.

Elder Ha stepped forward, holding in his hand two flower crowns made of roses.

“Those crowns are placed on the intended bride and groom,” Gloria whispered in her ear.
