What types of companies are licensing your illustrations?
I have my illustrations on magnets and paperweights at iPop, an alphabet series for Blik Graphics, Burton snowboards, stationery for Vigo cards, and lunch boxes for Aladdin, to name a few. All of these companies approached me. However, these days I am contacting companies on my own. I look for companies who seem really fun and places where my illustrations would fit in.
Are big-name clients overly controlling?
I’ve been lucky to work with Converse and Target as both have been a great collaborative process. They are open to suggestions and respectful of my work. And, likewise, I have to remember to be open to change and new ideas, because I’m working with good designers and art directors who may know something or see something that I don’t. The thing about big companies is that anything you submit has to go through so many channels. They are also so busy that communication can be slow sometimes. But other than that, there aren’t any major drawbacks.
