What to Do if the Dog Won’t Come When Called

What about a dog that won’t come when you call? When you’ve fed, walked, played with, cleaned up after, and done everything else a good owner should do for his or her dog, there’s a good chance you’ll be embarrassed, frustrated, or angry if the dog completely ignores you. No matter how you feel, it is important that you don’t get emotional. Never, ever call a dog and punish him when he comes to you. This will destroy your relationship with your dog and will ensure that he will never do well at coming when called.

If you are in a park or open field where off-leash exercise is permitted and the dog won’t come to you, do not chase him. Chasing causes animals (dogs included) to run away from you. Instead, in the emergency situation where your dog is moving away from you, look like you’re having plenty of fun where you are. Make a high-pitched, interesting noise as you move away from the dog. There is a good chance that he’ll come to see what is going on, and then you can praise and reward him for coming to you. Once you’ve got your dog back and know that he is safe, you can put the leash on him and do some training on coming when called. If you are in a situation where there are just too many temptations for the dog (such as other off-leash dogs), you may need to keep your dog on leash for the remainder of the time. You can go back to off-leash training in safe, controlled places such as your house, a fenced yard, or a training class.
