CHAPTER NINETEEN
âItâs not a lot of help,â Severn said as I spread the paper out on the table. Mind you, I could have replied that he wasnât a lot of help at that moment either as his body, closely held against mine, was definitely drawing my attention away from the note. I tried to ignore the soft breath on my ear as I replied, as businesslike as possible.
âIt proves she went there to meet someone.â
âTrue, but it doesnât tell us who.â
âThat would be too easy, but my bet is on Jason Broderick.â
âWhy?â
âShe wasnât wearing any knickers. She didnât go there to meet her grandmother.â
Severn sniggered.
âNo knickers means it was a man,â I continued. âIt also had to be someone she couldnât meet at any normal place or time, so that rules out the local guys.â
âUnless he was married,â Severn interjected.
I shook my head. âStill rules out the locals. All the married ones are about a hundred and fifty years old.â
âGosh!â Severn replied with mock horror. âEven older than me.â
âYeah, but they look it,â I giggled. âAny way, you know what I mean. The only possible suspects are young (at least young-looking) and foreign. That narrows it down to you lot â Seth, Aiden, Reverend, yourself â and Jason Broderick. Off the top of my head I can rule out the Reverend â heâs too short for Tashaâs taste, and Aiden â because Tasha hadnât even noticed him or she would have said something. We know she fancied you but Iâm going to rule you out even though you are currently the policeâs prime suspect, just because you said you didnât do it, you havenât axe-murdered me yet, and it is quite shocking enough that Iâve slept with a vampire, I donât want to think I slept with a killer as well.â
âThat leaves Seth and Jason.â Severn had kept up.
âWhat about Seth? Do you fancy him as the killerâ
âAs A killer, yes. As THE killer, no. Not if it was Tuesday night. He has an alibi. We were all together. All night.â
âSo, like I said, weâre left with Jason. Elementary, as Sherlock Holmes would say.â
Severn unwrapped himself from around me and sat down, peering at the note but carefully avoiding touching it. âBackstage, midnight,â he read aloud.
I leaned on the back of his chair and picked the note up, turning it over on my hand to read the printing on the back.
âItâs a piece off a rehearsal schedule, so itâs definitely someone in the cast,â I exclaimed. What I didnât add was that there was something familiar about the two words that I couldnât quite place.
âHow do we prove it?â Severn pondered.
We sat, silently thinking.
âI guess I should give the note to the police,â I said finally.
âWith your fingerprints all over it!â Severnâs tone was icy. âGood idea.â
âOops!â I felt suitably chastened for not thinking about that.
âAnyway,â he continued, still dripping sarcasm, âHow did you plan to explain how you got it? How did you get it?â he finished, his tone changing icy to intrigued.
