Chapter Sixteen

This time it was my turn to wake Chase by pounding on his door at nine o’clock in the morning. I hadn’t heard him come home the night before, but since I hadn’t fallen asleep until nearly three, it couldn’t have been more than a few hours since he’d crawled into bed. Normally, I’d have simply slipped out without bothering to wake him. He’d been clear about his desire to be kept in the loop, though. If he wanted to hear about the shift in our client focus before I had to go meet Karyn, it was going to cost him a bit of beauty rest.

Not only was he not angry when I woke him, he was downright beaming as he rubbed sleep from his eyes after opening the door. Sporting a wicked mess of bedhead, and wearing nothing but a pair of boxer shorts, he looked like he might float off into a cloud of bliss at any second.

“Date went well?” I asked, peering past him to see if he was alone.

He shrugged, but his silly grin belied the casual gesture. “It was fine. What’s up?”

“We had a visitor last night. Thought you’d want to know about it.”

Chase scratched his stomach, then yawned heavily. “Sure, yeah. Lemme just find a shirt and hit the bathroom.”

“Good idea. I’ll meet you in the kitchen. I’ve only got a few minutes before I have to leave.

I went downstairs and started making coffee, figuring Chase would appreciate a pot considering how little sleep he’d managed to get. Not that he seemed to need something as cheap as caffeine to pick him up. It looked like Cupid had not only paid him a visit, but convinced him to snort a few fat lines of pure infatuation as an appetizer to having his ass kicked head over heels in love. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy for the guy, but his increasing happiness with Kiana was highlighting just how long it had been since I’d felt anything like that.

Chase joined me, and I summarized everything for him while he made himself breakfast.

“So we’re working against Mr. Trang now?”

I scooped a large handful of cereal from the open box on the counter. “Not technically?” I mumbled around a mouthful of half-chewed sugar bombs.

It sounded as hollow to in my own head as I imagine it did to Chase. There was no way a guy like Trang would perceive action against his employees as anything other than a direct affront to himself. There was pretty much no room for interpretation of his order for me to stay away from Trey and his crew. If anyone thought I was going to let that stop me, I guess they didn’t know me all that well. Even if I could bring myself to ignore the murders they’d so casually committed in pursuit of gaining temporary magic abilities, I had unfinished business with Trey and the rest of those pathetic gangsters. Ever since leaving Johnny alive the night I’d escaped their house party, I’d wondered if maybe I’d gone too easy on him.
