Chapter 6

Tuesday

As I pull up to the address Abigail provided me, I can feel my temperature rise. It’s probably best that I wait until I’ve calmed down before seeing her, but I don’t think my feelings will change no matter how much time passes. This is not the type of neighborhood I expected her to live in. Secrets pays its dancers well, plus the patrons like to compete on who’s the biggest tipper. When you add what I give Abigail on Fridays, she should be doing alright financially.

I know most of her money goes towards Rick’s college fund, but would it kill her to consider the here and now and find a safer place to live. The streets are filled with cracks and potholes. All the houses are in some state of disrepair. Better yet, a bulldozer should just flatten the whole block, and they can rebuild. Hell, the yards are littered with bare spots, proving that even grass is too ashamed to live here.

I step out of my car and take a quick look around to see if I can spot any of the other residents. Sure enough, everyone seems to be peeking out their windows or just boldly staring at me from their lawn. The majority of them appear to be fifty or older, making this area safer than I initially believed. But that does nothing to ease my mind. Abigail should want better for herself.

When I finally grab my bag from the back and move towards the house, these issues consume my thoughts. I knock on the faded white door and wait for Abigail to answer. When she does, it’s with a smile and a cheerful greeting. Behind her, I presume, is Rick.

If he’s sixteen, there must be something in the water around here. He’s at least a head taller than Abigail and sporting more muscles than I have ever seen on a boy his age. Abigail never mentioned if they had the same father, but it’s evident that they don’t. Rick is several shades darker than her.

Abigail ushers me in, but I only get as far as the threshold before I stick my foot in my mouth again. In my defense, she didn’t even bother to ask who it was, just opened the door. I could’ve been anybody. That, coupled with my anger over their living situation, sets me off.

″Does your safety mean nothing to you? It must not. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have opened a door without finding out who’s on the other side.” Abigail’s eyes flash with anger, but I ignore it, choosing instead to push on. “Also, can you explain to me why the hell you live here anyway? Doesn’t showing off your assets every night earn you enough for some decent accommodations?” As soon as the words leave my mouth, regret sets in. The look on Abigail’s face is like a punch to the gut.
