Sketch by war artist Terence Cuneo of ‘Hardy’ survivors climbing cliff to safety. By kind permission of daughter, Carole Cuneo.

There was one sailor who by all accounts was washed up on the beach, that was Stoker Henry Maxfield. Cyril Cope, on his first visit back to Narvik in the early 1970s, endeavoured to find and record all the known graves of those taking part in the ‘Battles of Narvik’. He deduced from information given, that when local men found Henry’s body, because he looked to be a man in his forties, wearing a boiler suit, they assumed he was a ‘merchant seaman’. This led to confusion as to where his body was actually buried. Cyril, therefore, believed that Henry’s grave was marked as such, rather than like his unidentified shipmates, whose graves were marked as previously mentioned, ‘A Sailor – Known Only Unto God’.
