Chapter 17
"I feel like I should tell you something,â said Falau looking to Billy with earnestness in his eyes. "I'm a really bad flyer."
The two men sat side-by-side as the aircraft lined itself up waiting for the opportunity to take off, and go into the sky bringing the two men to the adventure that sat half a world away.
Studying the brochures in the mountains handed to him by Billy, Falau searched his mind for over three days to pick the exact right mountain that would allow him to fulfill his mission, and offer Billy the opportunity to kill him.
Mount Kanchenjunga, is the third highest mountain in the world. It rises with an elevation of 8,586 meters or 28,169 ft. lying in a section of the Himalayas called Kanchenjunga Himal and its closest population centers are Nepal and Sikkim, India. The mountain towers above, its peak often obscured by the clouds. Sheer rock faces make it one of the ultimate tasks for the elite climbers of the world.
When Falau placed the picture of the third highest peak in the world in front of Billy the man's eyes looked up to the big man questioning if he'd gone mad. Through hours of trying to be talked out of the decision including one instance of Billy getting up and storming away, Falau wore his teacher down. He let him know that he would be at his best for the climb.
"We're going to one of the toughest mountains in the world, and you're telling me right now that your bad at flying?â said Billy shaking his head at Falau. "I hope you're afraid of the plane and not heights."
"That's exactly what it is,â said Falau laughing. "You can put me on the side of the mountain and I can look 2000 feet straight down, and it doesn't bother me at all. But put me up in one of these planes, and I can turn into a blithering little schoolgirl."
"If that happens I hope you don't find it offensive if I pull up my cell phone and video you,â said Billy laughing at the man. "That would be a great video to put on my website. The picture of a big hulking man like you just crying away. I could put a banner ad just above it saying this could be you."
"Don't you dare Billy,â said Falau. "I just wanted you to know because I'll probably be white knuckling it most of the way. I put these armrests through quite a training."
"If youâre so bad a flying why did you pick something that's as far away as India?â said Billy. "There's a lot of mountains that are closer."
"Well, India is where they have the big K,â said Falau referring to the mountain by its nickname. "If they would be willing to move it to say Las Vegas that would help me out a lot."
"You're willing to put yourself through all this torture just to climb the mountain?â asked Billy.
"Of course,â said Falau trying to reassure the man of where his interest lay.
