As promised I knocked on her door and held a single white rose. I wasn’t even sure if she was home, but I couldn’t stay away. I didn’t want to wait until class to see her, especially not after what happened. The door was opened and there stood a guy, and a big one. He narrowed his eyes and his eyes flared with anger. The door slammed in my face, but I caught it and slipped inside her room.

“Hannah, why the hell is some Noxi freak at your door?” the man bellowed standing over her. I held back hoping he didn’t make me lose my temper.

I saw her eyes widen and heard her gasp when she peeked around the large man’s body before she stepped back.

“He’s my partner in class, and we have a lot of homework to do, Ryan. Don’t fucking question me. Daddy sent you here to spy didn’t he?”

The man mumbled something and she slapped him.

“Fuck off and you can tell Daddy I’m doing as he asked. Now get the hell out and mind your own damned business.”

I assumed the man was her brother. He shook his head gripping her wrist and she kicked him. “Don’t touch me asshole. I told you I’ve got this.”

The man who I saw was much younger than he looked, glared at me and shoved passed me slamming me against the wall. It took everything in me not to beat the shit out of him, but one look at Hannah’s pleading eyes kept me calm.

The man yanked the door open and looked over his shoulder. “I’ll be back soon to check on you.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m sure you will little brother, but remember, I’m not Daddy, and I am nothing like him, and you’d do well to remember you’re not him either. You can make up your own mind about things.”

He nodded curtly and left without another word and I stood frozen trying to figure out her message. Seemed her brother had more hate than she did.

When she walked past me without a look and opened her door and peaked down the hall before shutting and locking her door, I didn’t see the punch coming. She slammed her fist into my eye and I gasped falling to my knees.

“Son of a bitch! What the hell was that for?”

“F—for—” she threw her hands up in the air and glared at me. “You know why.”

I didn’t and damn she packed a punch. She hit harder than some of the guys I’d beaten the shit of. “You hit fuckin’ hard.”

She shrugged. “Yeah well I was raised to be violent.” She looked at the rose on the floor and then her eyes shot back to mine. “What’s that for?” she asked and pointed to it.

I leaned and picked it up and even though half the petals fell to the floor I held it out for her. “It’s for you.”

She eyed it and I saw the spark of something in her eyes. “Why?”

“Because I wanted to.
