The Next Generation

The main ritual at Rites of Spring was as usual delayed by the need to create intricate props and coordinate the efforts of an amateur crew. The organizers had put up makeshift dividers to block off the main field as they prepared the area for the ritual. A bell was rung and drumming begun to call everyone who wished to participate into the field. About two hundred people formed into an uneven, amoeba-like circle around a lilac-covered mound constructed to mimic the shape of a pregnant woman's swollen abdomen. It was a warm sunny day at the end of May and the aroma of the lilacs filled the air.
