Chapter Seventeen

“Breakfast!” Rex called as he slid a small stack of pancakes onto a plate. After pouring Holly a cup of coffee, he placed the plate and mug on the table then retreated to grab his own plate and a second cup of coffee for himself. After doctoring his java with some cream, he sat down across from Holly and gazed at her as he took a sip.

“It’s too early to be staring. I bet I still have sleep in my eyes,” Holly said, pouring real maple syrup over her pancakes.

His body shook with silent laughter. “After the way you woke me up this morning? Not likely.”

Holly’s sweet face turned a lovely shade of red, and she tilted her head so that a sheet of her hair would hide her eyes.

Rex just grinned at her. He’d awoken with her hands on him, and after a couple of soft kisses, they’d lost themselves in one another. It was by far his favorite way to wake up in the morning. It was also a relief, because it hadn’t escaped his notice that Holly had been a little out of sorts ever since the night they’d taken Evan home. She hadn’t been upset with him, that had been apparent, but she’d been slightly distant. This morning was a different matter altogether. She was relaxed, and her eyes were bright and sparkling as if she just couldn’t wait to get on with her day. It was magnetizing, and she was pulling him in just by staring at him over her coffee mug. “What’s got you in such a good mood this morning, Hols?”

Her blush deepened, but she just smiled at him and forked a bite of pancakes into her mouth.

“I see. Well, I wouldn’t mind waking up like that every day.”

“I bet,” she said with a small, secretive smile.

While Rex was relieved and more than happy that she’d shaken off whatever was bothering her, he was still curious and wondered if he should ask her about it again. He’d tried the night before, but she’d brushed him off, indicating it had just been a long week. And maybe she’d been telling the truth. Since they’d slept in and had a leisurely morning in bed, she seemed one hundred percent herself again. “What do you have planned for today?”

“Shopping with Ilsa. Want to meet me afterward so we can get Evan’s secret Santa gift? There’s a fancy kitchen shop on Main Street that should have everything we need.”

“Sure. I’ve got a few things to do for Zach’s tree farm, then I’m free. Text me when you’re ready for me to head down there?” he asked.

“Will do.”

Rex savored their time at breakfast, and when she was ready to go, he walked her to her front door. “I’ll get the dishes done and check on Sabrina before I go.”

Her expression softened, and she pressed her palm to his cheek. After kissing him lightly on the lips, she said, “You don’t have to do that. Leave the dishes. I’ll get to them when I get home.
