Chapter Thirteen

“I’m sorry, but we’re booked tonight,” a young, well-dressed gentleman said. He studied them for a moment and then looked away.

“For the whole night?” Crystal asked, leaning to the side to look behind him. “But it’s barely six o’clock, and you’re practically empty. There are open tables everywhere.”

“Ma’am, the building was rented out for a private event. I’m sorry for any inconvenience.”

He didn’t sound sorry.

Megan stepped forward a little, catching the man’s eye as he glanced down at Fred. “Can you tell us if a man named Charlie Williamson is here?” she asked. “He’s a friend of ours.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t say.”

“Thanks anyway,” Crystal said, grumbling as they made their way back to her car.

When they were out of view of the restaurant, Megan slowed. Eyeing a small alley between the buildings, she grabbed Crystal’s arm and towed her behind a row of parked cars.

“What are you doing?” she complained.

“Shh,” Megan crouched down. “Let’s just go around to the back of the building and see if he’s out on the patio.”

“That’s crazy.” Crystal glanced back nervously. “He just told us to leave.”

“He didn’t really tell us to leave, exactly. He just said we couldn’t come in. But what if Fred ran off, and we were just trying to catch him?” Megan asked. Crystal’s head swung around, and Megan smiled. “No harm in that, is there?”

“I don’t know.”

“It’s strange.” Megan snuck closer to the alley, leading Fred with her. “For someone who grew up in politics, you sure have a hard time bending the rules.”

“Hey.” Crystal hurried to catch up to her. “There’s nothing wrong with respecting rules.”

Megan’s lips slanted as she thought a moment. “Sometimes,” she finally conceded.

“Sometimes?” Crystal whispered.

They stood at the edge of the building, looking into the alley. Megan took the leash off and swung her arm forward. “Go, Fred! Go on.”

His tail wagged and his ears perked up, but he didn’t move. Megan dug into her pockets and then looked in her purse. “Do you have any crackers or anything?”

Crystal checked her pockets when suddenly, barking came from the end of the alley. They looked up to see a small white dog running along the sand. It was in view for only a moment, but a moment was enough.

Megan reached for Fred’s collar, but he took off in a blur, racing after the little dog. “Fred, come!” she yelled, running after him.

He didn’t slow. His big, heavy bark echoed between the brick walls around them. “Isn’t this what we wanted?” Crystal asked behind her, breathing hard.

“Well.” Megan was pretty sure this was not what they wanted. She only meant to get Fred onto the sand, then she could hook the leash on and have a good excuse to take a look around. Now there was no telling when he would stop. Besides that, catching him when he was excited was nearly impossible.

They emerged on a long, flat stretch of sand to find Fred nearly at the water’s edge. The beach seemed to go on forever.
