Chapter Seven

“Why don’t you ask her directly?” Fletcher asked a while later.

They’d tidied up the files and thanked the PC for his time and help. Next, the group had wandered over to the playground under the trees in the center of the township. Lacking any other clear direction, they’d taken a seat under a giant pine trees until one of them came up with another great idea. Fletcher was the first to speak.

“How are we going to do that?” Winter asked, saving Elvira the need to point out the obvious. “I don’t want to sound harsh or anything, but your wife is dead.”

“Yes, I know that.” Fletcher bristled as though Winter had poked him with a stick. “I meant, do whatever you did to get me out of the grave. Then she can speak for herself rather than just having accusations made against her.”

“We don’t have the spell book,” Elvira said. “I can’t recall the whole thing. Otherwise, I’d be happy to. It was too long to memorize, and the words were bizarre.”

“Well? Who has it?”

“A friend of mine,” Elvira replied. “Her name’s Midnight, but we tried her place already, remember? Her mother said she was sick.”

“I’m sure she’d be able to drag herself out of bed if you offered her the right incentive.”

Elvira gave a short laugh. “No doubt she would, except I have nothing to offer, so she’ll stay tucked up in bed until she’s feeling better.”

“Are you poor?”

Elvira felt herself bristling in the same way that Fletcher had earlier. “That’s none of your business. Besides, I’m thirteen years old. How many teenagers do you know who have money falling out of their pockets?”

“Okay. Calm down.” Fletcher held his hands up. “It was just a thought.”

“She’ll probably be at school tomorrow,” Winter said. “We can ask her then.”

“Where else can we get information, then?” Fletcher asked. “I don’t want my poor Heather to have her name besmirched a second longer than she has to!”

“Well, if we were investigating a crime, we’d start with the scene where it happened.” Elvira glanced over at Winter who was rolling her eyes. “Whereabouts did you get killed?”

“I’ve already told you a dozen times I can’t remember.”

“Well, I guess we’re waiting until tomorrow, then.” Elvira swung her legs, stirring up the dry pine cones with her toes.

“How about we visit your old house?” Winter suggested. “Since that’s where the police thought you died, that might be the place where it happened.”

Fletcher gave her a grin and a thankful nod. “That sounds like a good lark.” He jumped to his feet and clapped his hands together. “It’s just up the hill aways. If we get started now, we should be there in less than an hour.”

“Perhaps we should leave it until tomorrow,” Elvira said, casting a quick glance at the sky overhead. Clouds were gathering, causing shadows with more in common with evening than late afternoon. “There’s no hurry, is there?”

“No, that’s fine.” Fletcher sat back down, and Elvira had to stop herself from giving a gasp of surprise.
