Ian poured a cup of tea and stirred in lemon and honey. Now Everett was a scholarship student at Harrow and he was a class prefect. Ian had changed his life by introducing him to books. How could anything compare with that?
But then he thought about last night with Sabrina. The way she pressed her cheek against the window of the cab so she didnât miss the decorations on Fifth Avenue. How soft her lips had been when he kissed her; the scent of her perfume.
The door to the suite opened and Spencer stepped inside.
âI didnât think youâd be awake.â Spencer set a shopping bag on the coffee table. âYou werenât home when I went to sleep. This morning you were snoring so loudly, it was worse than foghorns on the Thames.â
âI had too many brandy punches,â Ian admitted.
âThat sounds promising.â Spencer took the silver dome off the plate and picked up a slice of bacon. âHow was your date with Sabrina?â
âWe saw a movie and ate pizza and then went ice-skating.â
âThatâs the best you could do in New York at Christmas?â Spencer raised his eyebrow. âFirst Tabitha and I saw the gingerbread houses at William Poll on the Upper East Side. My favorite had Frosty the Snowman peeking through the window. Then we drank Bloody Marys at the King Cole Bar and visited the Christmas village at the St. Regis. They turn one of the ballrooms into a winter wonderland for children. We ended the evening with glasses of prosecco at a boutique hotel on West Fifty-Third Street called Baccarat.â He pointed to the shopping bag. âI bought a few things from their gift shop. My mother will love their tea towels, and I got some jams for our cook.â
Ian was about to say that the jams were probably imported from England and Braxton Hall had closets filled with tea towels. But his head pounded and he didnât have the energy to argue.
âSabrina and I donât need to dine at five-star hotels and take in the sights of New York to enjoy ourselves,â he said huffily. âWeâre happy watching rom-coms and drinking blue Icees.â
Spencer stopped with his fork in midair and looked at Ian.
âYou took a girl to see a rom-com?â
âSabrina suggested it,â Ian admitted. âBut I had a great time.â
Spencer leaned back on the sofa and whistled.
âYou have fallen for her. You never go to the moviesâyou think theyâre a waste of time when you should be working. And I tried to get you to drink an Icee once but you said the blue dye would ruin your teeth.â
âYouâre the one who said I canât work all the time,â Ian retorted. âAnd the Icee wasnât too bad. I quite enjoyed it.â
âAll Iâm saying is Sabrina has made an impression.â Spencer went back to eating his sausage. âWhat are you going to do with her tonight?â
Ianâs head throbbed and he groaned.
âI did something terrible. I donât know if I can see her again.â
âYou havenât done anything terrible your whole life,â Spencer chuckled.
