“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? . . .I am the least in my family.” Judges 6:15

My friends’ conversation was animated, intelligent, and totally over my head. They lobbed literary terms back and forth like a game of scholarly tennis. I sat by silently—not as a spectator, but more like a bleacher, unable to participate.

Ever feel like an outsider in this world of writing and publishing? That you aren’t good enough because you don’t have a degree in English or literature? Or have yet to be published?

I do. Regularly.

That’s why Gideon’s story is such an exhortation to those of us who struggle with these insecurities. God saw Gideon. He saw him not as the least in the family, but as the person He would use to save Israel. And this victory would be miraculous because Gideon was “unschooled” as a military leader. When Gideon chose to believe God and to be obedient, he became a ready participant in God’s plan.

When God places His passion inside us and calls us, “Mighty warrior” know that He has already seen that impossible task realized.

He sees us where we are—insecure and ill equipped—and where we will be—victorious and experienced.

Knowing who we “aren’t”, is the first step to knowing who God is. Rise up, mighty warriors!

Reflection:

Have we allowed our insecurities to stand in the way of God using us to write His message or are we ready to be mighty warriors?

Prayer:

Prayer: Abba, I don’t want my doubt and insecurities to stand in the way of who You have designed me to be. I believe You have called me to write this message—help me with my unbelief. Lord, I also pray for wise counselors who can assist me in honing my craft as Your warrior of words. In Jesus’ precious Name. Amen.
