Clarity forgot about Mars after that, and the enormous volcano. The sun went on shining, and there was a tree at the end of the garden that she wanted to climb. It was too hard at first, harder than she’d thought. Kennedy wasn’t interested, but Daddy helped, and in a while she was sitting up on a branch, one leg either side, riding it like a horse.

It wasn’t many weeks later that she had the dream.

In the dream, Clarity was in a wood. Evie was there, and Teagen. Everybody was, all the children, even Ajay. In the dream they were dancing, all of them together, under a full moon. When they danced, Clarity thought the trees would be in their way, but then they weren’t. In the dream she heard a voice saying Let’s move the trees. It was a girl’s voice, but she didn’t know whose.

It wasn’t Kennedy. Kennedy wasn’t there. Kennedy was somewhere else, with Mummy and Daddy and all the grown-ups. They didn’t need grown-ups any more. They just had to want the trees to move, all of them together, wanting it; and the trees moved. If they wanted it, the Moon would move.

In her sleep, Clarity laughed. It was easy.

Then the dream changed. There was no one there, not even Clarity. There was just Maltharika, the Overlord. You couldn’t see his face, just his back. He was looking up at the sky.

The thing about the Overlords was, even when you could see their faces, you couldn’t tell what they were feeling; but in the dream Clarity knew Overlord Maltharika was sad.

In the dream, at the very edge of dreaming, she heard his deep, rolling voice, speaking to her again, speaking to all of them. Saying Goodbye.

Clarity woke up then and saw Monkey grinning at her.
