However, “By the end of the seventeenth century Locke distinguished as follows between knowledge and faith: ‘How well-grounded and great soever the assurance of faith may be wherewith it is received; but faith it is still and not knowledge; persuasion and not certainty “ (emphasis added).65 According to this presupposition, faith accepts as true that which has been delivered to it by authority, while genuine knowledge can only be attained by autonomous investigation and proof. “All belief was reduced to the status of subjectivity: to that of an imperfection by which knowledge fell short of universality.”66

Although rationalists, idealists, and empiricists differed among themselves, they were united by this fundamental dualism between faith and knowledge. And, like the theory/practice dilemma, this one is grounded in the deeper dualism between spirit and matter, higher and lower, eternal and historical, the inner knowledge of “clear and distinct ideas” within us that makes us masters and the unreliable opinions based on external testimony and authority concerning historical events that makes us servants.
