Chapter 3

“Tell me about Rita.” If Lydia had been human, talking about other women I was obviously attracted to, during breakfast, after we spent the night in each other’s arms, wouldn’t be the best idea, and even for wolves it wasn’t exactly something one should do. I should have a little more tact. Time was of the essence though, and if I intended to solve the mess the Rivertown pack was in, I needed to know everything there was to know about them, and an omega was a fairly important thing.

Even if my interest in her wasn’t solely because of her importance.

I think Lydia understood that, but then, seeing how her eyes lighted up at the mention of the other werewolf, I remembered omegas didn’t affect just alphas, even if the effect they had on us was stronger. Lydia cared for Rita, it was obvious, perhaps even more than just as a friend.

“What do you want to know about her?” Though seemingly open, I could note a kind of concern in her voice, and it didn’t take me long to realize it was concern for Rita. She probably feared I would try to do something to the omega, and sincerely I didn’t know if I could reassure her that easily. I couldn’t deny the pull the other woman had on me.

“How was her relationship with the previous alpha?”

“Not great,” Lydia started after moments, hesitating a little. “She felt a pull towards him, much like I can say she feels towards you, but that I know they never had each other. He tried, more than once, but she always ended up pushing him away, and he never dared to cross the line with her. He understood most of us might end up choosing her over him, and that there were plenty of alphas out there we could call into town if needed.”

I nodded, then focused on her face, making sure she couldn’t avoid answering the next question. “Do you think she had anything to do with his death?” Not that I would care much, but it was better to be sure of what Rita was capable of before approaching her again.

“What? No!” Lydia startled, then chuckled and smiled at me. “She might have hated him deep down, but she’s not one to kill.” I just raised one eyebrow at her. “And if she was, she would probably find someone else to do it for her. Not like there aren’t enough wolves willing to do whatever she asks of them.”

“Even you?”

Lydia stilled, then met my gaze and slowly nodded. “Even me, though her pull isn’t the reason. Not the only reason at least.” I just tilted my head, and she licked her lips before continuing. “Rita was there for me when I had no one, she gave me a job and a home for a few months, before I managed to reconstruct this old ruin. I owe her more than I can ever pay.”

I reached out and caressed her face, and her eyes fluttered close.
