Group Work:

Give each pair of students two prints in envelopes, three plastic chips, and manila folders. Assign students as partner A and B. Ask partner A to hold the print behind a folder so that it is out of sight of partner B.

Distribute the “Create a Quick Sketch” template (page 57).

Ask partner A to look at the print and think about how he or she will describe the print to partner B. Allow time for partner A to describe the print. Partner B will visualize what the print may look like and create a quick sketch of his or her thinking. Encourage the person who is describing to use the elements of art and principles of design in the description.

Remind students that they can use the plastic chips to “purchase” the answers to three clarifying questions.

Ask partner B to compare the sketch to the original print.

Switch roles. Ask partner B to describe print number two to partner A.
