The plan was to remain in the basement until we were certain the social worker had left. The problem was, the house was so big we couldn’t hear anything. We had to creep up the stairs and listen.

What we heard was a whole lot of trouble.

“Caw. Caw.” Lily was reenacting the pink phoenix show.

“Yes, birds say ‘caw,’” a female voice I didn’t recognize said encouragingly.

I moved to back up but ran into Sami, who was at the top of the stairs.

“Don’t kill me,” Sami snapped. “I’m too pretty to die!” She said it far too loudly.

“Pwetty,” Lily squealed. The pitter patter of her little feet indicated she was running in our direction.

“Crap,” I muttered.

Lily rounded the corner and lit up like a reality television star spotting a camera when she saw Aric. “Yay!” She threw herself at Aric, who had been spoiling her rotten.

He instinctively caught and lifted her.

None of us were surprised—although we were all horrified—when a pretty woman in a fancy suit, dark curls exploding in every direction, rounded the corner following Lily. “Hello,” she said carefully as her gaze bobbed between us. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Cara Carter.” She extended her hand.

I eyed it like an idiot. “Hello,” I said.

“We’re the maids,” Zoe blurted.

“You’re the maids?” Cara arched an eyebrow.

“That’s what I said,” Zoe confirmed.

“I see. Weren’t those the maids I saw going around the house in uniforms about twenty minutes ago?”

“We’re the specialized maids,” Zoe said, launching into her tale with gusto. “We don’t wear uniforms because we clean things nobody else wants to clean, and we refuse to suffer the indignity of a uniform on top of that. Uniforms are crap.”

“What things?”

“You know, like the gunk that gets caught in the drain,” Zoe replied. “That’s his job.” She jerked her thumb at Jesse. “And the ring around the bathtub? We make this one do it with a toothbrush.” She pointed to Sami.

“I don’t want to clean the ring around the tub,” Sami whined. “That’s gross, and whose toothbrush will I use?”

“If you’re not careful, your own,” Zoe warned.

This conversation was quickly spiraling. If we were the reason Aidan and Jerry didn’t get their son, I would never forgive myself.

“Did something happen with Lily?” Cormack asked as he rounded the corner. He was taken aback to see us. He covered quickly. “You’re early.”

“Yes, we’re that good of employees,” Zoe said. “We always show up early.”

“Employees?” Cormack asked.

“They’re your specialized maids,” Cara said.

Cormack scowled.

“We clean up the stuff nobody wants to clean up,” Sami volunteered. “Apparently, we’re using my toothbrush.”

Cara cocked her head and studied Cormack. “Something tells me this story is fishy,” she said.

“You whore,” Lily said.

I was about to fall over when the social worker broke into a wide grin.

“I’m glad to know that there’s some reality to this family,” she said to Cormack. “The prettiest little girl in the world thing was giving me doubts. I thought maybe there was something wrong in this castle.”

Cormack scratched his cheek. “I have a colorful brood of children.
