CHAPTER 13

Wearing nothing but torn jeans, boots and a workman’s belt, Jake hammered the last nail into the plank. Twenty down, ten million to go. He straightened and beads of sweat rolled down his tanned, muscular back, wetting the band of his jeans. Although he had opened all the windows and doors in the barn, the Arkansas humidity was still stifling.

Dusk was less than a few hours away and after a long afternoon of manual labor, he wanted nothing more than an ice-cold beer and a porch swing, swaying in the evening breeze. But he had a few more things to get done first.

Damn this Southern heat, he thought, as he sat back on his heels and reached for his water. He was up high in the loft, tackling the most difficult planks first and from that vantage point he could see all the work he still had ahead of him.

Splashing some ice-cold water on his neck and shoulders, he decided it was a good time for a break.

Jake laid down his hammer and glanced at his cell phone, which had one new text message from Veech.

Official report re: AR Capitol bldg just sent.

He climbed down the ladder, made his way to the far corner and squatted down next to the worn rug. Taking a quick glance over his shoulder, he pulled back the rug, plugged in his security code and climbed down into his command center.

The cool air instantly chilled the sweat on his body. No need for air-conditioning this deep in the ground.

He flicked on each system when the phone rang.

“Thomas.”

“Yo, Veech here.” Veech’s bearded face popped up on the monitor and he immediately wrinkled his nose at Jakes bare, sweaty chest. “Shit man, I know we said casual but this is pushing it.”

Jake smirked. “Sorry, your mom just left.”

He laughed, ignored the quip and clicked a few keys on his computer. “You read the report yet?”

“Just scrolling through it now. Why don’t you give me the Cliff notes?”

“Your name is mentioned.”

“Yeah?”

“Well, not your actual name, but it states that an “additional resource” had been assigned to further monitor activity.”

“Gotta start somewhere I guess.”

“Exactly. The report doesn’t tell us too much more than what we already know. The call was placed to the main line at the Arkansas Capitol building. Dude in a low muffled voice told the receptionist that ‘Today was the beginning, a bomb had been placed somewhere in the building, and that there were more to come.”

“Tell me they traced the number?”

“Nope, it was a burner phone, untraceable. Probably tossed in some trash can in God knows where. But get this, new information is that the security cameras picked up a white male wearing long sleeves and pants, which is way too hot for the weather, about the same build and size as Stooge One. He had a hat on too, pulled low.”

“When?”

“A day before the call was placed. It’s not much, you know, but it’s something.”

“Shit, man, we need a hell of a lot more than that to connect the Stooges to the capitol building threat.
