Lorna stood on the balcony of Osirisâs home in one of the tall black towers outside the gates of Castle Bleak. She gazed across the silver and jet of the Funeral Mountains, rising like sharp teeth gnawing on the horizon, dripping with the crimson of the rising sun.
She had never crossed those jagged, imposing peaks before. What lay beyond was, to her, another world. The Ethereal Realms were vast, yet Lorna had never been allowed to leave the small corner of the Shadow Court; beyond Castle Bleak, the world seemed foreign and terrifying.
But Osiris has been beyond the mountains, she reminded herself.
As Eredaâs emissary, he had journeyed far and wide, seeing all the lands, from the crystal towers in Dream Court to the Earth Courtâs metropolis buried deep in the heart of the earth. Osiris knew the way to the Court of Sky and would know the people there when they arrived. This gave her some comfort, though not much.
As Lorna stood lost in thought, the wind whipped her hood back and her long, dark hair caught in the wind. She let its cold fingers tangle in it and chill her skin. The wind. Dominion of the Court of Sky. Would she find a friend in it or just another enemy?
She felt a hand at the small of her back and turned to face Osiris.
âRemember, this is a beginning, not an end,â he told Lorna, placing his hands on her shoulders and gazing deep into her eyes, steady and kind.
Lorna nodded, but as she did, a single tear escaped her eye and tracked down her cheek.
Since the day she was born, her life in the Shadow Court had been one of fear and servitude. Why, then, did the idea of leaving fill her with such emptiness? Why did she fear that the moment she stepped off this ledge and took to the sky, a cavern would open up inside her soul that would remain for all her days, never to be filled?
âI donât know why Iâm so sad,â Lorna admitted, leaning against Osirisâs strong arm at her back and letting him support her.
Osiris traced the streak the tear had left, wiping it away, then smoothed Lornaâs hair back, tucking it behind her ear.
He snaked his arm around Lornaâs waist, pulling her to him, and told her, âItâs okay to be afraid. Change is never easy.â
A long sigh escaped Lornaâs lips as she forced a smile she did not feel. The sense of dread, that feeling they were reaching for a future they could never hold, kept her lips tight. Was the deep foreboding a warning from fate? Or was it only in her mind?
She shook her head to clear it, but the cobwebs of malaise still clung, sticky in her thoughts.
âAs long as Iâm with you, I know it will be okay,â she forced out, though she did not believe it.
Osiris kissed her forehead lightly, then pulled away, and Lorna instantly missed the heat of his body. He pulled her hood forward again, so her face was covered once more.
