Doreen Trask lived in a town that was a short distance away from where our car crash had happened. It only took a few minutes for us to get on the phone and track down a specific address for her. Then it took another fifteen minutes to drive there. We drove at high speed all the way.

But when we got there it looked like we might be too late.

There was a vehicle sitting out in front of Doreen Trask’s house. It was a black SUV. There was even a big dent along the right side on the passenger door, which had obviously been made when the SUV collided with our car.

The front door of Doreen Trask’s house was already open.

Billy quickly called in to Huntsdale to get the closest police station to send us backup right away. Billy wanted to wait until they got here—and Girard and Alex too, which was the by-the-book approach. But I wasn’t going to wait. If someone else was in that house, then every extra minute or even second could be fatal for Doreen Trask.

“I’m going in,” I announced to the three of them, drawing my 9mm Glock out of my holster and heading for the house.

“Okay, then we’re all going in,” Alex said, pulling out her weapon too.

Billy and Girard nodded too, and we made our way across the lawn and toward the open front door.

That’s when we heard gunshots from inside the house.
