“STOP, STOP!” cried one of the coaches.

But it’s hard for young squirrels to stop chasing once they’ve started. And even though Cordelia wasn’t really a squirrel, she had always lived with squirrels, so of course she acted like one too.

Cordelia chased Annabeth all around the gym. Cordelia knew she could catch her. If she reached out her hand, she could grab the tip of Annabeth’s bushy, squirrelly ponytail. But chasing was the fun part, not catching.

Cordelia spotted a tall stack of blue gym mats. She clambered up them. When she got to the top, she stood up tall, spread her arms like wings, and jumped off.

“AMBUSH!” she yelled, flying through the air.
