CHAPTER 28

The next day, late in the afternoon, we emerged from the rainforest into a rugged peninsula of volcanic rock. Cliffs and jagged outcrops overlooked the ocean in a steep vertical drop. We walked for an hour on the glossy basalt, smoothed by millions of years of rain and salt spray. It was a moon-like environment. Hollowed-out dips caused trip hazards with our ankles. If we hadn’t kept a constant eye on our footing, deep crevices would have swallowed us whole. The headland spanned to the horizon and probably much farther. This massive volcanic cliff, with its streams of once molten rock, was alien and strange.

Marek led ahead with the mapographic. He stopped and scanned the area, his squinting eyes alerting us that something was wrong. “It should be here. The Otturin Cave.”

Lainie kicked a rock. She blew hair out of her eyes with a huff. “Maybe you read the map wrong.”

The lieutenant rubbed his hand along the back of his neck and checked the mapographic again. He made a strangled noise. “Not possible. This isn’t your average map. The cave has to be here. Somewhere close.”

He was right. Mapographics were accurate. They were powered with magic. It was impossible for them to lead you astray.

I tried not to let my exasperation show on my face. “Okay. This place was once volcanic terrain. The cave might be an old lava tube. Everyone look for it.”

Half an hour passed, and still we were out of luck. The sun set in the west, the light fading fast. After days of being trapped in the Kanzina ranges, the tangerine glow of the sunset, the pastel purple colours of the sky, and the briny scent of the sea was a welcome reprieve. But it couldn’t last. We were out in the open, and there was the ocean to worry about. The sea was deceptively calm with its creamy surf, but deep in its depths, I wondered if chak-lorks loomed. Could they even climb the cliffs?

I tipped my head up to the sky. Stars were visible in the twilight. No sign of rain. At least we had that in our favour. “I think we should head back to the rainforest. We can’t find the cave now. We’re too tired. We need to make camp in the rainforest where there’s shelter and resume the search tomorrow.”

It was bad news. I wanted to find the portal and locate Jad as soon as possible, but I couldn’t risk all of us to the exposure of chak-lorks. It wouldn’t help Jad if we were torn apart by water-bloated corpses.

Indree choked out a laugh. “Are you serious? The rainforest is an hour away. I’m not walking back there. Not at night.”

A murmur of agreement met her outburst. Dark smudges ringed everyone’s eyes, their skin bleached like an old photograph left out in the sun. Even their hair was matted from dirt and sweat. I was deliriously hungry and tired. I wanted to rest too, but we couldn’t do it. Not out in the open.
