“Now, I know this is disappointing, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ve got the wrong man,” Heather said, addressing a dozen forlorn faces while trying to harness some of the confidence Julius had attempted to install.

“Yes, it does,” Tina interrupted loudly, her face thunderous as she stepped through her open office door.

Heather frowned, stepping down from her imaginary podium but ready to protest. Tina had spent the entirety of her somewhat rousing speech on the phone in her office. Her hearing might have been batlike, but she must’ve missed great swathes of information to come to that conclusion.

Heather coughed. “As I was saying, the timeline adds up, he was present at both secondary crime scenes, and he was known to stalk women at night. Some have even said he was violent, so as far as I’m concerned, he’s still on the table.”

Tina waited for Heather to finish, her arms crossed. “A couple of kids just found another body. A fresh one.”

All hell broke loose, and as everyone whipped themselves into a frenzy of cross-talking panic, Heather and Tina stared silently into each other’s eyes. She didn’t need to ask if the body was female; she didn’t need to ask if she was found by the lake; and she didn’t need to ask if she’d been bludgeoned. Tina’s mournful and furious gaze told her everything she needed to know. It wasn’t and had never been Thimbles. Their killer was still out there, and a third woman had been butchered by this person right under their noses.

Three, Heather thought miserably. An interesting number, to be sure. There were three sides to a triangle, the world’s strongest shape; three stages of existence, birth, life, and death; and three requirements to becoming a serial killer. Murder, murder, and another murder. Excluding Hazel Brock—whose disappearance was, as of yet, nothing more than a coincidence—it seemed their killer had finally graduated.

“All right, everyone, back to work!” Tina thundered. “I let you take it easy yesterday, considering most of you were hungover, but there’s plenty of paperwork filled out and vandalism to investigate. Reeves, you’re in charge while Detective Bishop, Officer Silva, and I head down to the crime scene. I expect to see some progress when I get back.”

Reeves—who most of their coworkers called Uncle Pat—looked a little disappointed not to have made the invite list but dutifully herded the protesting and panicked officers back to their desks anyway.

Secretly, Heather was glad he wasn’t coming along. It felt like one more job well done by him, and she’d no longer be the only detective in town. The concept troubled her. What would it be like to try to work a case as Tina’s second favorite investigator?

However, as Tina nodded toward the door, it seemed that was a worry for another day, and Heather ventured outside feeling a mix of mild confidence and profound nausea. The chilly, wet wind lashed at her face, and despite being fed up with an unseasonably cold fall, she was temporarily grateful as the shock-induced fire in her face fizzled out.
