Close Call

The next day I awoke with what felt like the mother of all hangovers. The bedside alarm had sounded at seven but I’d slept through till two. My encounter with Faine last night had left me physically and emotionally drained, and I just didn’t have the energy to get up and face another day of school. All I wanted to do was bury my head under the covers and wish the nightmare away. The all-consuming fear of what Faine might do next cast a long shadow over me and I could think of nothing else.

Eventually, I mustered the energy to haul myself out of bed and go to the bathroom to clean up. I flinched when I caught sight of my reflection. There was a trail of dried vomit encrusted around my mouth and I figured I must have thrown up again during the night. I still felt jittery, as if I hadn’t completely shaken off the devastating effects of Faine’s kiss.

Taking a glass from the cabinet, I filled it from the tap and took a long, hard gulp of water, swilled it round a little and then spat it out. Leaning forward, I grimaced at the dark bags under my eyes. I was still wearing the same dirty velour tracksuit from the night before. The front was stained with food and vomit. I shook my head. This nightmare was really starting to take its toll on me.

Next, I splashed my face in an attempt to sober up and drank endless cups of cold water. Finally, as I stumbled toward the kitchen to get something to eat, the doorbell rang.

At first I ignored it, assuming my mother would answer. But as the eerie silence of the house embraced me, I suddenly realized that I was alone. Two o’ clock on a weekday meant Mum was at work. Damn it.

The bell rang again, snapping me from my stupor. Cautiously, I made my way up the hall to the front door, wondering who on earth it could be. For one fleeting moment, I feared it might be Faine, but vetoed that idea. Surely even he wouldn’t be stupid enough to return so soon?

Gingerly, I glanced through the spyhole and saw a man and a woman dressed in dark clothing. I took a step back, frowning. Neither of them looked familiar and I was instantly on my guard.

Unlatching the door, I greeted the two strangers with a mild nod. “Yes? What can I do for you?”

The man flashed a friendly smile. “Hello Sam. It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?”

I was puzzled. “I’m sorry, am I supposed to know you?”

“I’m Detective Chief Inspector John Studholm,” the man explained, extending his hand. “And this is Detective Sergeant Louise Mills from the Metropolitan Police. Can we come in, please?”

“If you’re looking for my mother, she’s not in,” I replied defensively. “She’s at work and I don’t know what time she’ll be back.”

“Actually, it’s you we came to see,” said Studholm. “We just need to ask you a few questions.
