I ASKED AROUND ABOUT EMMA. PEOPLE KNEW something was going on. Others didn’t understand what we were worried about, but only half the inhabitants of the Cathedral were in on the big paranormal secret. The other half were blissfully unaware.

In truth, the Cathedral wasn’t meant to be a full-time home for everybody. We were a halfway house of sorts for most of our inhabitants. The goal was to help them transition to a better life. Communal living wasn’t for everybody. I wasn’t under any delusions about what it meant for me—the Cathedral would always be my home—but I wanted the others to move on to something bigger.

Because of what the Cathedral was created to be, it was not surprising that nobody knew Emma well. People minded their own business and allowed others to open up—or not if that was preferable—on their own schedule. Nobody had pressed Emma about the details of her life, and it was coming back to bite us.

“Where would she go?” I demanded as I paced the arboretum. “I just don’t even know where to look.”

“What about a locator spell?” Lincoln was helping Winter weed, but he wasn’t nearly as enthusiastic as the white-haired witch when it came to getting his hands dirty. “You’ve done those before,” he said to me.

“She’s magical,” I replied. “I mean, I can try, but it’s likely she managed to hide her tracks.”

“And if she didn’t, and Luna can suddenly track her, it might be a trap,” Winter added. “I think it’s better if we try to figure out where she’s staying. I bet she’s not alone. Besides, the potions are gone. We need them. If she distributes them or makes more, then we’re in trouble.”

“You mean the zombies,” Jacob surmised. He sat on a bench and watched me pace, his expression unreadable. “They could take over the city.”

I stopped long enough to shake my head. “I think that’s unlikely. So far, it has taken a single potion to turn a single zombie. They don’t seem interested in biting others to turn them.”

“What are they interested in?”

“I don’t know. All the ones I’ve seen have been attacking. We don’t know if anybody has gone missing from the streets, right?”

“I haven’t heard of that happening,” Winter replied. “But we don’t always know right away when people go missing. It often takes weeks because of all the park jumping that happens.”

My stomach clenched as I considered it. “They have to be operating out of a building, and I think that building has to be close, because someone would’ve noticed Emma loading all those potions into a vehicle.”

Jacob sat up straighter. “That right there is a very good point. We’re a live-and-let-live group, but somebody would’ve noticed Emma taking the potions we all know Winter has been working on and moving them. Someone would’ve said something.”

“Which means they were carried out,” I mused. “How?”

“The loading dock is the only thing that makes sense,” Lincoln replied.

I started in that direction. “Let’s check it out.”

“While you’re doing that, I’ll get Angelina on the case,” Jacob called out.
