CHAPTER 10

“When?” Julie frowned.

“Whenever,” Martha replied. “He must have said something to you at some stage before he was—” she drew her finger across her throat.

Julie paled. “How did you know?”

“I am president of the senior sleuthing club,” Martha replied airily. “I have a sense for these things.” She tapped the side of her nose.

“Well yes, he did say something to me. I didn’t tell anyone because—” Julie glanced around the room but no one else was in earshot “—I was embarrassed.”

“What did he say?” Pru asked.

“Ruff?”

“That if I was ever tired of my husband, to come and visit him. I think you know what he was really saying.”

“Yeah.” Martha nodded. “Huh. He was a bad guy.”

“Of course I told him there was no chance of that happening. I tried to be polite about it, and not tell him what I really thought about his … offer.”

“Because you’re a lady.” Martha nodded.

A pleased expression blossomed across Julie’s face. “Martha, that’s one of the nicest things someone has said to me.”

“You’re welcome.” Martha grinned. “But it’s true. Pru here is a lady, although I call her a good girl. But anyway, did he say something else to you?”

“No, not after I rebuffed his – whatever it was. That was on the day he was killed.”

“Did you tell the detective?” Pru asked.

“No!” Julie looked shocked. “I didn’t want him looking into my marriage – I mean, it’s not perfect, but there was no way I would ever be tempted to take up Dave’s offer – or anyone else’s. I love my husband. I just hope my time away will make him realize he still loves me – and is willing to show it.”

“I hear you.” Martha nodded.

“I guess I’d better get back to the hotel.” Julie looked downcast for a moment. “I thought I’d enjoy my time away from home but now all I can think of is if my husband’s organized the laundry and if he’s maxing out the credit card on takeout every night.”

“Why don’t you call him and find out?” Martha suggested.

“Maybe I will,” Julie replied after a moment.

“Would you like to have dinner with us?” Pru asked impulsively.

“Ruff!”

“Good idea,” Martha declared.

“Well, it would be nice to have some company,” Julie began, “and you could tell me more about Gold Leaf Valley.”

“It’s a deal.” Martha grinned.
