Nightline

A nightline can be an extremely effective way of catching fish while you busy yourself with other tasks or catch up with sleep.

Animal snare

Rope or string can be used to make a number of effective animal snares and traps for outdoor survival. One of the simplest snares involves first creating a loop in one end of a piece of wire or string; the other end is then anchored to a tree or post. You will need to attach the rope firmly to the anchor and create a loop around the standing part of the snare (see p.123). In order for the animal to put its head through the loop, you need to judge the size of the animal (for example, a rabbit) and place the loop at the right level with the optimum size of loop from the ground. Try to ensure that the head goes through, but not the body. If necessary, you can support the loop off the ground with twigs. Place the loop in the centre of an obvious animal run, which you can identify by flattened grass and animal droppings, Make sure you camouflage the loop and the rope effectively.

Basket trap

Although a basket trap can take a long time to make, it is an effective way of catching fish if placed in the right part of a river. As with netting, it should be used for a short period only, and never left indefinitely.
