THEY WALKED SLOWLY towards the fountains where Camille prayed Honoré was waiting, but in her heart she knew she would not be there. She felt tears prick her eyelids.

‘It would seem they had no intention of releasing Honoré, Richard,’ she said, her voice laced with bitterness.

‘No. It was a ruse.’

‘What will we do? I’m so worried. Do you think he’s the blackmailer?’

‘Not a chance.’

‘Then who?’

‘He could be an opportunist, or he’s working for the real blackmailers. My guess is the second suggestion. These people are far too smart to carry out their own dirty work.’

‘He will be questioned?’

‘Extensively. Apollinaire will get it out of him. He seems extremely calm but he has his own way of finding out information. He is an experienced police officer.’

They went back to the Rue de Tivoli and hailed a cab. Cecily had begun to look pale and Camille wanted to get her back to the hotel and run her a warm bath. The swaying of the taxicab lulled Cecily into a sleep and Camille moved her slightly so that her head rested on Camille’s shoulder.

‘Do you think Madam Tatou has been killed, Richard?’ Camille asked him, her face etched with sorrow.

Richard paused before answering. ‘I assume you want me to be honest with you, Camille?’

‘Always. There’s no point asking the question if there isn’t honesty.’

‘Well then let me give you an honest answer. It all depends on who the youth is who took the bag.’

‘In what way?’

‘He may well have been an opportunist who saw you leave a bag on the steps and wondered if there was anything of any worth inside so he took it; a beggar or a petty thief. There are as many of them here as there are in London.’

‘And if he was?’

‘Then I would say he was in more trouble than Madame Tatou.’

‘And if he is an associate of the blackmailer?’

Richard took a breath. ‘Then I think Madame Tatou could be in trouble.’
