Chapter 22

The following day, Richard arrived at Scotland Yard almost before the sun came up. He’d had a restless night and wasn’t in the best of moods. It was the day of the interviews and he knew it would be exhausting. They were short of staff; police officers had taken holiday owing to them to make the most of the remaining good weather. He sighed as he sat at his desk, longing for a cup of strong coffee to keep him alert.

‘Lewis,’ he called out of his office door.

Constable Lewis came bursting in through the door, his cheeks red as though he’d been running.

‘I suppose you’d like to join me on the interviews today?’

Russell Lewis smiled then tried not to look too eager. ‘I think it would be very helpful for me, sir...I’m sure I would learn something.’

‘I’m sure you would. And I’m sure I would love a cup of strong coffee to take with me. Make one for yourself. You’re going to need it I’m almost sure of it. Today you will hear all kinds of stories, some truthful, some not truthful. The problem is Lewis, we have to sort the wheat from the chaff. And then we have to look at those we think were lying and try to discover why they were lying. You’ve picked a good day. We’re so short of staff my sergeants aren’t available, apart from Keen, who between you and me, isn’t, so it’s your lucky day. ‘Today we’re interviewing Millie the moon girl, Sadie, the hat-check girl, and Aaron Kaplan.’

‘D’yer think he’s involved, Chief Inspector?’

‘My instinct says not, but, as doubtful to you as it may seem, I’ve been wrong before.’ Constable Lewis looked glum. ‘So...’ said Richard rising from his chair and gathering his notes from his desk, ‘go get that coffee, make them large ones, and we’ll start.’
