Sixteen

Jesse was surprisingly open to conversation. He didn’t go into specifics about phoenixes, but he remained calm and rational. When it came time for Cormack to lay out the reaper reality, he listened intently. He sat for hours and was still absorbing when Lily woke from her nap and joined the party in Cormack’s office. She appeared in the door, her eyes still sleepy, and then headed straight for him to climb on his lap.

“Hello,” Jesse said, surprise evident. “How was your nap?”

“Shh.” Lily rested her head against his chest, clutching a stuffed gargoyle in her arms. “My pig is sleepy.”

Jesse’s forehead creased as he regarded the plush toy in her arms, and then slowly he raised his eyes to me. “Pig?”

I smirked. “Something tells me you’re not fully aware of all the paranormals out there.”

“Gargoyles are real?”

“Absolutely.” Aisling bobbed her head. “The reaper library is run by one. He has a large … tail.”

I had to bite back a laugh. I’d heard the story about Aisling being confused by what might’ve been Bub’s tail—or might’ve been something else—more than once. It always filled me with glee.

“There’s a whole gargoyle army in the area,” Cormack confirmed. “They’ve saved our bacon more than once.”

“Flying pigs,” Jesse mused. “My mother is convinced that you’ve been doing odd things here for years.”

“Even for reapers, we’re not normal,” Aisling confirmed, her eyes drifting to me. “I can’t believe you broke into their house. That was ballsy.”

“Or stupid,” Cormack growled. “Don’t think we’re not having a conversation about that, young lady. You’ve already been arrested once this week.”

I merely shrugged. “I was bothered. What did you want me to do?”

“The smart thing would’ve been nice.”

“Hey, I uncovered a big secret and got you guys talking.”

Cormack let loose a heavy sigh, looked to the ceiling, and muttered something I couldn’t make out. Then he managed a smile for my benefit. “What about you? Have you managed to dig up anything new on the golems? Izzy said you were on Belle Isle last night. What were you doing there?”

“Izzy is a big, fat tattletale,” I groused, folding my arms across my chest.

“Izzy has your best interests at heart,” Cormack countered. “What were you doing?”

“Taking a swim.” I felt multiple sets of eyes on me and had to fight not to squirm. “It’s not a big deal.”

“That’s not how I see it.” Cormack wagged his finger. “She said you were dressed in scuba gear. How do you know how to dive?”

“I have a friend,” I replied evasively. I refused to meet his serious gaze.

“Luna, you’re the one who brought Jesse here because you knew it was best for the strength of the team,” Cormack snapped. “If you truly believe that, you’ll want us to know what you were really doing.”

That was some roundabout thinking. “We’re not getting into the diving,” I started.

“You are licensed?”

“Sure. We’ll go with that.” I forced a sunny smile that I knew would agitate him. “It doesn’t matter that I went diving. It only matters what I saw.
