I would never get used to the staring, but with Luke by my side, it was a little bit more divided between the two of us. Most women couldn’t keep their eyes off him, which I understood. And after they were done ogling, they would turn their cool looks on me, obviously assuming that I was something more to him than a project.

When we took a turn towards the back of the mansion and Luke headed for the massive double doors that led outside, a thrill went through me. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed being able to go outside.

Luke turned the knob on the door and held it open for me. The warm breeze hit my face in a soft caress as I stepped out onto the brick patio. My eyes bulged as I took in the massive yard. Everything about this place was big and gorgeous. There was a sparkling pool with a cascading waterfall churning the crystal water as a few people swam and laughed amongst themselves. At the back of the lot, there were basketball and tennis courts and plenty of open space to play yard football. It felt like stepping into a dream. Nothing seemed as scary back here.

“You said you needed some air,” Luke shrugged. “There’s plenty of it here.”

I smiled to myself and took off toward the big gazebo. Someone had decorated it with string lights that flickered like fireflies in the dark, and it had plenty of sitting space. I made a mental note to curl up here with a good book sometime soon.

Luke followed me up the steps and took a seat next to me on one of the benches. I turned to face him, a happy smile still on my face.

“Thanks for bringing me out here. It’s beautiful,” I said.

“If I had known this was all it would take to make you happy, I would have done it sooner.”

We stared at each other for a moment too long. I was glued to his eyes. The twinkling lights sparkled on his body, lighting up the gold in his hair and catching on all the curves of his face. He was too handsome to be real.

My breath started to catch in my throat when he didn’t look away. Instead he met my stare with the same sort of fascination I felt. For a breathless moment, I thought he might try to kiss me.

A squeal from the pool snapped us both out of it. I turned just in time to see one of the guys toss a girl into the deep end. She came up laughing and cursing at him.

My cheeks felt like they might combust on my face. What was I thinking? One moment I was terrified of Luke and his fangs of glory. The next I thought he might kiss me? And the problem was, I’d wanted him to. I was so starting to lose my mind.

Luke cleared his throat. “So, you wanted to know about my trip.”

I nodded fervently, relieved that he’d spoken first.
