■The first of the German battlecruisers is well represented with this kit. The one-piece resin hull is complete up to the main deck and nicely captures the complex shapes near the bow with the raised forecastle deck and casemates. The scale length is bang on the actual length of 562 feet. The amidships casemates and the embrasures on the stern quarters are also done very well. The deck features a moderate level of detail with bollards, anchors and chains, and some hatches, planking being represented with thinly scribed lines. The after superstructure, funnels, and bridge platforms are sepa-reately cast on thin resin wafers, with some added detailing of pipes and ventilators. The main gun turrets are correctly shaped and feature some detail on their roofs. The boats are adequate but not to the standards of those found In Combrig kits, and the two-piece funnels do not feature any grilles.

My example came with brass turned barrels for the main armament, which Is an improvement on the overly-thick resin barrels supplied. The casemate gun barrels will need to be cut from plastic rod, but the AA gun mounts are included. There are no torpedo net shelves and booms, and the masts and cranes will have to be scratch-built using additional reference as the two assembly instruction sheets do not include scale dimensions, although they will prove useful when placing the ship’s boats. A small sheet of flags is also included. This kit will build up Into a nice replica of the real ship right out of the box, but more experienced modellers will find plenty of scope for detailing.
