Chapter Eleven

Nolan

Something was on Ashley’s mind. I could tell by how subdued she was when we left her apartment and drove to the country club. She spent most of the ride there looking out the window at the city around us, as if she hadn’t lived here for most of her life. I had seen the distrust in her roommate’s eyes when we were at her place, and I had to wonder if she’d said something to make Ashley have second thoughts about being with me.

Whatever it was, I was going to have to find a way to fix it because now that I’d had a taste of her, I knew that I couldn’t let her go. The flirting was over and this was the real deal as far as I was concerned.

We arrived at the country club, and I parked in front, getting out the car and hurrying around it to open Ashely’s door before handing over the keys to the valet. It felt good to put my arm around her waist as we walked to the door, which was pulled open by a man in a white uniform that greeted me by name. I was here often enough that most of the staff knew who I was.

The restaurant was immediately to our left, and it was already half-full of members eating breakfast and watching the tennis match being broadcast on flat-screen televisions hung high all around the room. I asked for a table near the east windows, knowing that we’d have a view of the pond that the club kept stocked with fish for the members that were interested in that sort of thing. There was no one out there with a fishing pole this morning, but we did spot a family of ducks on the surface of the water. There were picnic tables out near the edge of the pond, and I wondered if a picnic lunch was something that Ashley would like to do.

Wow. This woman was turning me into a complete sap and she didn’t even know it. The funny thing was that I didn’t care. If she was happy, I was happy.

This woman might really be “the one.”

I turned over my mug, and a waitress appeared almost immediately with a pot of regular coffee to fill it up with.

“And for you, miss?” she asked Ashley, who hesitated.

“They have plenty of iced coffee options,” I told her. “Just flip over your menu.”

She did, finding the list of beverages that took up the whole back page. Once she’d ordered a Hazelnut iced coffee with whipped cream, the waitress left, giving us time to look over the menu.

“How did you know that I prefer iced coffee?” Ashley asked when we were alone.

I smiled at her. “I pay attention, especially when it comes to you.”

“Why?”

The way she asked the question didn’t sit right with me, and I leaned forward over the table holding her eyes. “What’s on your mind, Ash? I can tell something’s bothering you.”

Some women might have tried to be cagey and denied that there was something wrong, but Ashley didn’t do that.
