Chapter 13

Ifidget with the hematite necklace around my neck, pulling it back and forth on the gold chain. I simultaneously pace back and forth in front of the double doors where I met the King and Queen when I first arrived in Mariande.

My power is thrumming with my pulse like a slow, steady simmer. With Fin’s help, I’m hoping to find somewhere to release this built-up power that hasn’t had a decent outlet in nearly two months.

“Miss Reva,” the knight at the door interrupts. I stop mid-stride, gaping between him and the cracked door. “The King is ready for you.”

“Thank you.” I walk through the open door underneath the threshold.

Like the first time, King Darius sits on his throne underneath the domed ceiling, but the one meant for the Queen is empty this time. He slopes forward with his elbow resting on his knee and his hand framing the side of his face. His graying hair is disheveled, and his cloak hangs over the arm of his Queen’s throne.

“It is good to see that you are well, Miss Reva,” King Darius announces, reclining against his throne. “Though I wish it were under different circumstances, of course.”

“For what it’s worth,” I say carefully. “It is the same few men that have given me a problem from the beginning. Otherwise, the rest of your staff and military has been manageable.”

“Manageable?” King Darius’ eyebrow curves upward. He rises from his throne, walking down the few steps of the dais to stand in front of me, hands clasped behind his back. A vision of Pax standing that same way has me nearly flinching. “Do tell.”

“There are those who are kind and compassionate towards me.” Clint, Elly, and Fin all flash in my head. Even Chef B makes an appearance. “There are those who see me simply as a coworker, and there are those who see me as a Magic. They’re not cruel or rude, but I can tell they are cautious, if not skeptical. I can sense their wariness about me holding such a high position.”

“I understand that progress takes time,” he mulls, pacing before me. “You know about the Magic communities I’ve put up not just here in Saros, but also across the Mariande Kingdom.”

A statement, not a question. “I will say I was startled when I found out.”

“It’s unfortunate that was your initial reaction, but I can’t blame you. Your people have faced terrible prejudice for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Why would a kingdom suddenly
