Christopher found Amy asleep next to the grave of Lily, her face still wet from her grief, dirt on her nose.

Careful not to wake her, he lifted her in his arms, carried her down the hill and into one of the remaining towers. The old man had two daughters, the lasses had seen to the room, building a fire in the hearth and bringing water for the basin.

Weary from their travels, he gently laid her on the narrow bed, covering her with their cloaks as she murmured in her sleep, too low for him to make out the words. He knew how she felt, losing someone she cared for, for he felt the same. Unwilling to leave her alone, in case enemies lurked, Christopher slept next to the hearth, a hand on his blade.

When he woke in the morn, she was still asleep. Her face was pale with purple shadows under her eyes. Instead of waking her, he saw to the horses and sent the girl to fetch food and drink for their journey. They would ride for Highburn.

On the way, he would ask her to tell him about Lily, for he knew she remembered. No matter what she had done or if she was running from a husband or sire, he would see her safe. He could take her to Wolfshire with him.

Nay, he shook his head, ’twas likely it was in the same sorry state as Weddington. If he were wiping out an enemy, it was what he would do, destroy all their holdings, burn the fields, and steal the livestock.

By the time he returned to fetch her, she was sitting by the fire on a small stool. She turned to him, sorrow etched on her face.

“You have been so kind to me.”

He strode over to her, dropped to one knee in front of her.

“I will see you safe, no matter where you needs go.”

She looked at him, eyes bright, but she did not weep, instead she nodded.

Satisfied for now, he handed her the fine boots she wore, admiring the fine stitching. The soles were unlike any he had ever seen.

“We are going to Highburn to see Tristan, but first, I needs stop along the way in Wiltshire.”

She pulled on the other boot, then dusted off her skirts.

“Could we see the stone circle?” Amy followed him down the steps and out into the chilly morn.

“Stonehenge?”

The place was odd, no wonder she wished to see it.

“Aye. My brothers called it the Hanging Stones.”

“It’s supposed to be magic.” She paused. “I’ve heard of people disappearing from there. Do you think it’s true?”

He thought for a moment as they readied the horses.

“Perhaps. Or mayhap some dolt was in his cups and thought a shadow was a person.” He shrugged. “The world is full of wonders, good and bad, who knows if the stones have power. You can see for yourself.”

She nodded to herself, lost in her thoughts.

As they rode away from Weddington, she turned, looking over her shoulder, but Christopher stopped her, a hand on her arm.
